Data recovery is a process which is used for salvaging data from failed, corrupted, damaged or inaccessible secondary storage media. Data recovery is used for accessing the data on these types of media when it cannot be accessed by using the usual methods.

Physical damage will all the time cause some loss of data, and in lots of cases the logical structures of the filing theory are also damaged. Any logical damage must be dealt with before any files on the failed media can be recovered.
Usually, most physical damage cannot be fixed by the end user. Occasion a hard disk in a normal environment may let in any airborne dust or other fine particles which may determine on the platter and get caught in the middle of the read/write head and the platter. This can cause further damage and hinder or compromise the recovery process.
Most end users simply do not have the expertise or the required hardware to carry out these repairs, and data recovery associates are very often employed to recover the important data.
